Planning

Historical Context

Stonehenge represents a story of immense human endeavor, spanning over 1,500 years. Its construction began around 3000 BC with an early henge monument and continued in phases into the Bronze Age. It was built by a sophisticated prehistoric people who had a deep understanding of engineering, astronomy, and social organization. The purpose remains a subject of intense debate, but it was undoubtedly a place of immense importance, likely serving as a ceremonial center, a burial ground for royalty, and a complex celestial calendar.

Photography Tips

  • A wide-angle lens is perfect for capturing the scale of the entire monument
  • Use a polarizing filter to make the sky bluer and reduce glare on a sunny day
  • Frame the stones with the natural landscape or the ancient barrows in the distance for a more compelling composition
  • Don't be afraid to shoot in 'bad' weather – mist and clouds can add incredible drama to your photos

Insider Tips

  • Download the Stonehenge audio guide app to your phone before you arrive to save time
  • If driving, arrive early as the car park can get very busy, especially during school holidays
  • Walk one way to or from the stones instead of taking the shuttle both ways to better appreciate the landscape and see some of the barrows up close
  • Visit the Neolithic houses first while you are fresh, before heading to the main stones.

Truly Awe-Inspiring

Seeing Stonehenge in person is something else entirely. The audio guide was fantastic, providing so many interesting theories. Booking tickets online beforehand was essential; the queue for on-the-day tickets was huge. The whole site is so well-managed, from the visitor centre to the shuttle bus. A must-do in the UK.

Bucket List Item Ticked!

Took a day tour from London that included Stonehenge and Bath. It was a long day but so worth it. The sheer scale of the stones is mind-boggling. Our guide shared so many fascinating stories. The visitor centre exhibition really sets the stage perfectly before you see the main attraction. Highly recommend!

Misty and Magical

We visited on a slightly rainy, misty morning in May, and it was absolutely magical. The mist swirling around the stones gave it such an ancient, mysterious atmosphere. It was less crowded than I expected. My only advice is to wear waterproof shoes, the grass gets very wet. A beautiful experience.

Perfectly Organized

The efficiency of the timed entry system was very impressive. We booked our 10:30 AM slot and walked right in. The shuttle was quick, and the path around the stones allows for great photos from all angles. The 360-degree immersive experience in the visitor centre was a surprising highlight. An unforgettable piece of history.

Impressive but Crowded

Stonehenge is incredible, there is no doubt. The engineering is just unbelievable for its time. It does get very crowded, especially midday in summer. My tip would be to book the earliest or latest time slot possible to avoid the worst of the crowds. Still, a 4-star experience for the history alone.

A Powerful Place

I felt a real sense of peace and history here. It's more than just a tourist site; it feels important. We spent ages just looking at it, trying to imagine how and why. The visitor centre is excellent and adds so much context. We booked our tickets online a few weeks in advance with no issues.

Worth the Trip

A classic UK sight that lives up to the hype. The audio guide is a must to understand what you're looking at. It's a shame you can't walk among the stones with a general ticket, but I understand why. The views are still excellent from the path. A well-organized and informative visit.

Spectacular at Sunset

We booked one of the last entry times of the day and were rewarded with the most beautiful golden hour light over the stones. The crowds were thinning out, and it felt so much more intimate. It was breathtaking. Booking through the platform was easy, and the e-tickets worked flawlessly.
